1841 – Ordination

Ryle had intended to pursue a career in politics but due to a recurrence of a previous health problem he had to give that up, and when his father’s bank crashed he was left with no money. However, he chose to enter the Church of England ministry and was ordained by Charles Sumner, Bishop of Winchester on 21st December 1841. He became curate in Exbury, Hampshire in the following year.
