Augustine of Hippo, an early church father, was bishop of the North African city of Hippo and known as perhaps the greatest theologian of the church. His sermons and writings have been instrumental in shaping both Catholic and Protestant theology, particularly the doctrines of grace of the Reformation such as original sin and predestination. His famous autobiographical Confessions is still widely read and studied today.
