David Livingstone was a Scottish missionary, explorer, and physician who led expeditions throughout the African continent to make geographical discoveries and evangelise unreached tribes. Strong-willed and individualistic, he did not work well with other missionaries and explorers, and in his late life he regretted having spent so little time with his wife and six children. But his exploration opened up Africa to mission and commerce with the rest of the world, and he spoke out consistently against the slave trade.
