Affair of the Placards

On the night of 17th October, 1534, placards (tracts) were posted across Paris, denouncing the mass as an abomination. Reprisals were swift and brutal as those with reformist sympathies or anti-Catholic views were persecuted and branded as seditious. This led to Calvin slipping out of France, eventually ending up in the Swiss city of Basel, a sanctuary for reformers.
