Calvin was born in the French cathedral city of Noyon, sixty miles north of Paris. He was the first of four sons who survived infancy. His mother, Jeanne le Franc, died of unknown causes during Calvin’s childhood. His father, Gérard Cauvin, was the cathedral notary and registrar to the ecclesiastical court. He hoped his son would become a priest.
