Calvin’s disaffection with Roman Catholicism and his conversion is difficult to date precisely. Biographers believe it was a gradual process occurring in the early 1530s. In a letter written from Geneva in 1539, Calvin spoke of a growing consciousness of sin before God and new desires to pursue godliness via Scripture rather than Church traditions. He wrote of God’s ‘wondrous goodness’ which ‘at last delivered me.’
