Luther suffered from ill heatlh for years preceding his death, including angina, Ménière’s disease, tinnitus, arthritis and a cataract in one eye. On 17 February 1546, around 8 am, Luther experienced chest pains before retiring to bed. At 1 am on the 18th, Luther awoke with more chest pain and was warmed with hot towels. His companions, Justus Jonas and Michael Coelius, shouted loudly, ‘Reverend father, are you ready to die trusting in your Lord Jesus Christ and to confess the doctrine which you have taught in his name?’ A distinct ‘Yes’ was Luther’s reply. He died at 2:45 am.
