In late 1558, Calvin became ill with a fever. Following recovery, he strained his voice while preaching, which brought on a violent coughing fit. He burst a blood-vessel in his lungs and his health declined. He preached his final sermon in St. Pierre on 6 February 1564. On 25 April, he made his will. A few days later, the ministers of the church visited his bedside and he bade his final farewell, dying on 27th May, aged 54. Following fears that his grave would be treated like a shrine, Calvin’s final resting place is an unknown place in the Cimetière des Rois.
