Edict of Worms

1521

A decree issued by Emperor Charles V. It included the words, ‘We forbid anyone from this time forward to dare, either by words or by deeds, to receive, defend, sustain, or favour the said Martin Luther. On the contrary, we want him to be apprehended and punished as a notorious heretic, as he deserves.’

Luther himself had gone into hiding. Frederick the Wise, Elector of Saxony, had ‘kidnapped’ Luther after his appearance at Worms and had brought him under his protection at Wartburg Castle.
