Girolamo Savonarola

1452 - 1498

Girolamo Savonarola (21 September 1452–23 May 1498) was an Italian friar who preached against the corruption of the Catholic clergy, prophesied judgment and reformation in the church, promoted republican politics, and was put to death along with two other friars for their defiance of the pope. Later Protestant Reformers, particularly Martin Luther, considered him a forerunner of the Reformation in view of his teachings on grace and holiness.
