Studd met Priscilla Livingstone Stewart (28 August 1864–15 January 1929) from Belfast, Ireland, working in China. She shared his dedication to mission work and conviction that they should give away all of their earthly goods. The two were married by a local Chinese man in 1888. They had four daughters together, and two sons both of whom died in infancy. Studd believed they were only given daughters to be an example of the worth of baby girls to the Chinese.
