An eventful meeting with Rome’s city prefect landed Augustine a prestigious academic position in Milan as a professor of rhetoric. Soon after arriving in late 384, Augustine visted Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan, who was himself a great rhetorician as a preacher. The two became friends, and Ambrose’s influence would lead Augustine to faith in the following years.
