In 388, Augustine made preparations to return to Africa with his mother and son. Monica, however, died before they set sail, and Adeodatus died shortly after they resettled at Augustine’s family property. At this point, Augustine converted his family house to a monastery, sold the rest of the estate, and gave the money to the poor.
