Return to Geneva

Calvin’s guidance and oversight was sought by the city council; Geneva lacked leadership and was riven by factionalism. He was provided with a generous salary and a house by St Pierre Cathedral, where he would preach over 2,000 times. He also implemented forms of church government (the ‘Consistory’ which oversaw the laity and the ‘Company of Pastors’ which oversaw the clergy), a catechism, and regulations regarding prayers and singing within church.
