Augustine was sent to school at age 11 about 20 miles to the south of Thagaste. It was during this time that he encountered the depravity of his heart when he and his friends stole fruit from a neighbourhood garden. He wrote about the incident in his Confessions: ‘It was foul, and I loved it. I loved my own error—not that for which I erred, but the error itself.’
