Revival in Northampton

1734 - 1737

In autumn 1734, Edwards preached a sermon series on justification by faith alone which resonated with the community. Signs of religious commitment among the laity increased, especially among the town’s young people. The revival spread to twenty-five communities in western Massachusetts and central Connecticut before waning in 1737. Edwards wrote an account entitled ‘A Faithful Narrative’, in which he detailed the phases and varieties of the experience of Christian conversion.
