Welcome Hall and Keswick Convention


Amy spent time with girls who worked in the local mills who were known as ‘shawlies’, and in 1887, two donations enabled her to erect the ‘Welcome Hall’ as a meeting place for the girls; the building is now the home of Welcome Evangelical Church. In the same year at the Keswick Convention, Amy heard Hudson Taylor speak about mission work in China and felt the call to missions herself.

Amy Carmichael

Amy Beatrice Carmichael was a Protestant Christian missionary in India, who opened an orphanage and founded a mission in Dohnavur. She served in India for 55 years without furlough and wrote many books about the missionary work there.
