Celebrating the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin (1509-1564), it is good to see the publication of new books about and selections from the great Reformer. Scarcely anyone has been more influential in biblical doctrine and exposition during the post-Apostolic era than Calvin.
Most of his works are still available and the comment made in the biographical introduction by Joel Beeke and Michael Haykin are perfectly justifiable: ‘The biblical fidelity, practicality, and experiential depth of Calvin’s writings are unsurpassed in Protestant history’.
The co-publishers have put us in their debt by producing this book of daily readings, selected and edited from various of Calvin’s writings by Joel Beeke. There is one for each day of the year, each on one page. There is a balance of material from the Old and New Testaments.
This volume not only provides a good introduction to the Reformer’s expositions but it also affords edifying and heart-warming comment for every day. It is a handy book to have at the bedside or to give as a gift.
A couple of small complaints. The ‘white space’ around the text is very limited, which makes reading just a little less pleasing than it might be. Also, there is no page numbering until page 385! These, however, are small points and do not detract too much from the great value of this book of daily readings. Its use cannot but benefit the soul.
