In this useful and interesting book, Edwards shares many reasons for trusting the veracity of the Bible. It is the first book in a series of six that will go on to address: the authority of Scripture; the formation of the canon; the history of the text; Biblical criticism and personal Bible study.
Starting with a simple but comprehensive overview of the Bible, the author goes on to show the compelling reasons for trusting it.
Edwards begins with a study of the stunning accuracy of Bible prophecy. He emphasises the perfect way in which predictive prophecy is fulfilled. He then turns the reader’s attention to the gospels, demonstrating with numerous examples that they cannot be anything other than authentic accounts by eyewitnesses of the life and ministry of Jesus Christ.
The author then progresses to the overwhelming evidence for the historical Jesus. Edwards draws from ancient historians (Josephus, Tacitus and others) to demonstrate the irrefutable fact of Christ’s life and death. Although not the primary focus of the chapter, some key evidences for his bodily resurrection are also briefly covered.
The author then focuses the final two chapters on the historical accuracy of the Epistles and Old Testament books. Edwards co-authored Evidence for the Bible, and his expertise manifests itself in the final chapter. He presents the reader with an unanswerable case for the historicity of the Old Testament, particularly emphasising the uniqueness of the God of Israel. However, at times, the language and depth of historical detail become quite complex for the general reader.
This introduction makes frequent reference to topics covered in later books in the series. While this is to be expected, it could limit its usefulness as a stand-alone book. Nonetheless, it stands as an excellent resource for those approaching this subject for the first time. Edwards stands unswervingly on the inerrancy and authority of the Bible. It is an encouragement to read such a strong defence of what is so fundamental to evangelical conviction.
