Australia: Law Commission accused of trying to water down the ethos of the nation’s faith schools

A row has broken out between the Australian Law Reform Commission and faith schools over plans to alter the rules about the hiring of teachers.

The Commission says faith schools should only be allowed to insist certain key roles – like head teachers and religious education teachers – are filled by teachers who share the faith ethos of the school.

Other staff roles, according to the Commission, should be open to any applicant irrespective of their faith, including teachers who are living an LGBT lifestyle.
