This book is centred on four sermons preached in the late 16th century by Ludwig Lavater, Heinrich Bullinger’s son-in-law and successor in Zurich.

Readers should not be put off by the constitutional background of this city-state and its lifestyles. If anything, this added to my enjoyment of the book. Its lessons are very relevant for today’s readers caught up in the effects of the Covid pandemic, war in Europe, and international shortages.
