Scottish Reformed Conference

This year’s Scottish Reformed Conference (SRC) was well attended and enjoyed two inspiring biblical addresses by Dr Liam Goligher. His first message was a timely defence of the doctrine of substitutionary atonement, based on an in-depth exposition of 2 Corinthians 5.
Dr Goligher set forth the biblical basis of the atonement in the grace of the Father and pointedly responded to those suggesting that substitutionary atonement is a sub-biblical, even pagan, doctrine. He emphasised that without it there is no gospel.
His second address was equally arresting. He opened up the teaching of Psalm 2, showing how it sets forth the exaltation of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
A godless age casts off submission to God’s authority and rejects his Son, but God is not threatened by sinful man’s rebellion.Instead, he acts in sovereign power to exalt Christ. Dr Goligher also showed that this psalm is a powerful evangelistic message, and pointed invitation to sinners to submit to Christ and live.
Rev. David Carmichael, chairman of the SRC, spoke on the dangers of deserting Christ. His message was a focused appeal to believers both to be aware of the dangers of backsliding and to stand fast in the gospel.
Next year’s conference in May 2008 will feature Rev. Joel Beeke of Grand Rapids, USA (tapes from ScottishReformedConference.org).
