Nicola Sturgeon has resigned as Scottish first minister, after finding herself embroiled in a storm of controversy over her government’s plans to liberalise transgender laws.

Not only did the UK government vow to veto the new laws, but the issue became highly divisive in Scotland itself.

There was widespread alarm over the case of Isla Bryson, who was convicted of raping two women but was initially sent to an all-female prison when he claimed to be transgender.
