This 2015 edition of the RSB is an updated version of the 2005 edition. The 2015 edition has a different layout and includes some new features.
The first thing striking the reader is the list of contributors. R. C. Sproul, the editor, has been in ministry for 50 years. Contributors come from a variety of Christian traditions and seminaries, spanning from Canada to South Africa.
Several helpful features aid understanding of the biblical text. The first of these is the section introductions. Each section (such as the Pentateuch) is introduced by its author(s), the date of writing, the unity of the section and its theme.
Following the section introduction is the book introduction, which sheds helpful light on the background of the particular book. This is followed by an outline of the entire book, making it easy to see how the parts of the book fit together.
In terms of page layout, the ESV text is single column, making reading much easier. Extensive footnotes in the bottom half of each page are divided into three columns. These notes are short commentaries on the text. The cross reference section is on the inside panel of each page. This is a slight problem, because some of the references are a bit obscured and the Bible needs a good pressing down in order to see the reference.
Another helpful feature is the theological notes that are spread throughout. These notes aim to help the reader understand a particular topic and give clarity on the subject. Also, embedded with the footnotes section are maps dealing with relevant geographical areas.
Towards the back of the Bible, the reader will find helpful topical articles written by several contributors. These topics will help the reader understand issues related to Bible study and interpretation.
A useful addition is several creeds, confessions and catechisms. All the major doctrinal articles of faith are included. These would aid any who are interested in statements of faith or in deepening their doctrinal understanding.
A concordance, Bible reading plan and weights and measures chart follows the creeds section. The last feature of this Bible is a full-colour maps section. These maps include some interesting detail that you would not normally find on other study Bible maps.
The RSB is an excellent resource for anyone who is looking for a trustworthy study Bible.
