Although McLaughlin doesn’t use the term, her book is about wokeness. Christians, she claims, react either by attacking or embracing the beliefs behind this modern ‘creed’. She presents a ‘third approach’: to ‘disentangle ideas Christians can and must affirm from ideas Christians cannot and must not embrace’.

This laudable aim is not achieved. Instead of defining concepts like justice and racism biblically and asking how secular ideology measures up, McLaughlin’s method lacks biblical clarity. Here are two examples.
