I was bored

Hello, my name is Lewis.

I have been going to church all my life. My parents are Christians and they always took me along, but I’ll be honest, I got bored at church. I sat there, I went through the process, but I did it because I had to, not because I wanted to.

You see I wasn’t going because of God but because of friends – a story common to many young people, I am sure. But I am writing this because things have changed. Let me tell you about it.

My journey to Christ started when I went to a camp in the Brecon Beacons organised by Young Life. I knew about God and I knew he was real; I just couldn’t be bothered to praise him or enjoy him. Let’s be honest; I didn’t care and I return to the fact that I got bored!

However, on the Wednesday of camp, something challenged me. It was something that my group leader Ross said to me. He said I should put my name into John 3:16 – so it would read: ‘For God so loved Lewis that he gave his only begotten Son that Lewis might believe in him and should not perish but have everlasting life’. I could just not get it out of my head that someone so great would do something like that for me.

Why would he do it for someone who sinned and who wasn’t already a Christian? I kept thinking about it until the end of October. Then, one night, I asked Christ to forgive me and wash my heart out and help me to praise him and read his Word.

From that day I have read the Bible every night. Will I keep this up? I really want to and I’m not relying on myself, for God is my strength and he has changed my life.
