Inductions – Alfred Place Baptist Church, Aberystwyth

November 2016 | by Michael Keen

On Saturday 3 September, Rhodri Brady’s service of ordination and induction to the pastorate of Alfred Place Baptist Church, Aberystwyth, took place.

Rhodri’s father Gary Brady, minister of Child’s Hill Baptist Church, London, and grandfather Geoff Thomas, retired minister of Alfred Place, took part.

Also taking part were Alfred Place’s church elders, Robert Strivens, principal of the London Seminary (previously London Theological Seminary) and David Green, vice-principal of the London Seminary. It was a most happy and special occasion, with more than 150 people present.

The church had been encouraged to look for a man for the ministry within its members first. Having sent Rhodri to London Seminary, there was the possibility he might be the man of God’s choice.

Ian Jones (elder) gave a history of this call. Rhodri and Sibyl had been students in Aberystwyth for five years, doing undergraduate and postgraduate study. They had integrated themselves into the life of the church well and loved Aberystwyth. So the church decided to issue the call, which Rhodri accepted.

Questions were put to Rhodri and the church by Robert Strivens, and Rhodri was set apart for the ministry. Preaching from Deuteronomy 6, David Green made the point that, if the Lord is our God, then we must love him with all our being, and love God in the little things as well as the great things.

Elder, John Noble, gave an exhortation for Rhodri to preach as did Richard Baxter, as a dying man to dying men and women, and to the church to support the new minister and his wife.

This new chapter in the life of Alfred Place sees the appointment of its 12th minister since the church was founded in 1870. Rhodri has on his heart continuing the church’s gospel witness to the town and to university students, through preaching the unsearchable riches of Christ.
