Carey Outreach Ministries began in 1997 through an invitation from Romania to Bob Penhearow to train spiritual church leaders. Since then, Carey has expanded rapidly in response to the desperate need around the world for solid biblical training. After being established in Canada, offices have opened in the UK and the USA.
Carey has always aimed to be a cutting-edge ministry, not content to work in places where theological resources are readily available. Instead, we advance by faith into countries which can sometimes be difficult, such as Nepal, Mongolia, Cuba and Egypt, to spread Reformed truth in areas without established theological training.
Our intention is to encourage, equip and empower spiritual leaders who will influence hundreds of churches and thousands of people. Students take courses at certificate, diploma, or degree level in conjunction with the Carey International University of Theology, which currently validates the courses taken by London Seminary students in the UK.
Bob Penhearow has recently stood down from his role as president to take up a part-time position with Carey’s literature ministry, the Carey Printing Press. He plans to spend any spare time in his semi-retirement with his family, his motorcycles, losing at chess, and occasionally scuba diving!
Bob passes on the baton to Drs Tim Beavis (as international director) and Dan Ramsey (as USA director). These gifted men share Bob’s vision and, under the Lord’s gracious hand, will take Carey into the next stage of development.
Like Bob, Tim Beavis is British, with a Cornish heritage. He came to know Jesus as his personal Saviour when he was 14. After working in Marriott hotels in London, the Lord led him to the USA to serve as an urban youth worker in Camden, New Jersey. He then moved to Chicago to study at the Moody Bible Institute. It was there he met Lisa and they were married in 2001. They now have four children.
Tim has served for over 16 years as a church planter and pastor. He holds degrees from Birmingham City University (UK) and Moody Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in expository preaching from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
Tim has served as a ministry leadership coach for pastors and church planters and has sat on the boards of several ministry organisations. He has also been engaged in ministry supporting church workers in Europe and Asia.
Dan Ramsey hails from Ohio. He knew Denise from schooldays, and they were married in 1978, and now have three daughters and six grandchildren. Dan graduated with an M. Div. from Grace Theological Seminary, Indiana, after which he ministered in Germany with an American mission.
He served as pastor of a German church and as field superintendent for Germany and the Czech Republic. He returned from Europe to the USA in 2003, and served in senior and teaching pastor roles, with an emphasis on teaching and training leaders.
In 2013 he began doctoral studies at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, with an emphasis on Reformation and eighteenth-century Particular Baptist history. He graduated in 2017 with a PhD in historical theology.
Carey is constantly exploring new opportunities to bring theological education to new areas. By God’s grace, we hope to see theological training established in needy areas around the world in the years ahead.
The teaching schedule for 2019 is currently being planned and there are still some vacancies to be filled in Madagascar and the Philippines this year. Lecturers must have a minimum of 10 years pastoral experience and an MA or equivalent in a relevant subject. More help is needed, so if any readers feel constrained to offer their services, they should contact Jonathan Bayes at [email protected]
