The title of this book may seem superficial to some – but its subtitle, Covenant Joy in a Fallen World, shows both the depth and the heart of this excellent book on marriage.

VanDoodewaard’s idea of happiness is definitely not a Disney one; it is ‘two sinners under one roof, committed to working together to have a solid marriage’. She encourages Christians to have a determined desire to seek happiness within marriage, with the aim of obeying and glorifying God. She writes of respecting each other’s differences and personhood while not using them to excuse sin, as ‘self-centredness is the ‘most damaging and persistent sin’ in marriages.
