The Strict Baptist Historical Society (SBHS) held its annual lecture at Homerton Baptist Chapel in March. Norman Hopkins gave fascinating insights into the life of John Stanger (1742–1823). His life entailed ‘forty years marked by poverty, prejudice and persecution; forty years characterised by steady, conscientious, and committed service’.
Stanger’s early days were spent among the General Baptists in Moulton, Northamptonshire. In 1766 he was called to minister among Particular Baptists at Bessels Green in Kent as assistant to Mr Benge, the long-serving pastor.
