MPs have voted to allow a backbench bill to legalise assisted dying in England and Wales to continue to the next stage. MPs voted 330 to 275 to permit Kim Leadbeater’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill to progress to committee stage, where it will face line-by-line scrutiny.

But, given the number of votes against the bill, it’s far from certain that the bill will clear its remaining stages. It still has to clear various hurdles in the Commons. The House of Lords also has to consider the bill. And the voices of opposition are growing, which means the bill may yet be defeated.
