Philippians – Rejoicing and Thanksgiving

David Chapman,

Christian Focus, 290 pages,

ISBN: 978-1-84550-687-2

Star rating: 4 stars

The author successfully fulfils his aim: ‘This commentary is designed for pastors and other ministry workers, as well as for every interested student of the Bible.’  Using the ESV, he elucidates Paul’s original Greek ‘in ways understandable to those who know English.’ This well-written and readable book is a useful tool for pastors or those preaching occasionally.

The Introduction is long, running to over twenty pages, but essential to understand the background, purpose and structure of Philippians. The chapters are shorter, each ending with questions for personal reflection, study questions, and additional notes, thus making the book suitable for daily reading and interactive study.

Reading this commentary has deepened my knowledge of Paul’s letter and filled my heart with rejoicing and thanksgiving. Buy your pastor a copy!
