Brazilian parents Audato and Ieda Denardi have been sentenced to 50 days in prison for home-schooling their daughters, in what could be a test case for thousands of Brazilian families who are also home-schooling, despite an unclear legal framework for doing so.
The parents, who are Christians, were convicted of ‘intellectual neglect’, with the judge stating the home education curricula had failed to include programmes on ‘gender and sex education’ and ‘tolerance and diversity’.
The court also concluded that because the girls, aged 15 and 11, did not like some traditional folk music, their home curriculum had also failed to educate them properly in cultural diversity.
