The government is consulting on proposals to give qualifying cohabiting couples in England and Wales new financial and inheritance rights when their relationships end.
But the reforms have prompted concern that the legal distinction between marriage and cohabitation could be further weakened.
A public consultation called, ‘A Fairer End to Relationships’, which closed in mid August, covered financial provision for cohabitants following separation, and inheritance rights when a cohabiting partner dies.
