A young Coptic Christian scholar and YouTuber who was sentenced to five years in prison for his Christian videos has filed an appeal to overturn his decision.

Earlier this year, Augustinos Samaan was handed a jail sentence, with hard labour, for producing videos teaching about and defending the Christian faith. Reports online claim that shortly after his sentencing his mother died from a blood clot.

Known as ‘Dr Augustinos’, he regularly posted videos to a channel with more than 100,000 subscribers, often with subjects such as ‘will God answer prayer while you sin’.

The videos, which were largely academic in nature, sought to answer common questions about Christianity. Some of his videos explored the differences between Christianity and Islam, often including philosophical and theological criticisms of Islam.
