Christianity has lost more believers than most other faith groups around the world recently, but the two biggest denominations have diverged in terms of ‘faith switching’.
According to research published by the Pew Centre for Research, Catholicism has lost people to religious ‘switching’ in many countries, while Protestantism has gained.
Switching is defined as having been brought up in one faith or denomination, and either leaving it as an adult or switching to another religion or denomination.
The research, published in April by Kirsten Lesage, William Miner, and Rebecca Leppert, was based on 2024 surveys among thousands of Catholics, Protestants, and non-religious people across the world.
