Dr. Witmer's motivation is to comfort his readers in knowing that it is God who is sovereign, not us; that all things do work together for good, even when we can't see how. He uses a word which was new to me – sovereigntism – to sum up this conviction. I discovered that its origin is in political nationalism, but the parallel intended is the absolute independence of God in exercising his sovereignty.
