The House of Commons has struck down an amendment that would have protected people’s freedom to pray silently near abortion clinics.

The amendment was debated as part of the Public Order Bill which seeks to outlaw peaceful protest outside abortion clinics in England and Wales.

A group of MPs tried to clarify that ‘a person engaged in consensual communication or silent prayer’ within a censorship zone would not be committing an offence.
