Anthropologists have noted that worship is a universal urge, hard-wired into the very fibre of our being. As believers, we know this desire has been placed there by God in order that we may worship him. For those who reject God, however, it leaves a gargantuan hole, a deep unfulfilled emptiness. Many try to fill this vacuum by idolising other things or people, including rock stars, sports stars and political leaders.

Increasingly today people are worshiping themselves. Paul writes in 2 Timothy 3:2, 'In the last days people will be lovers of themselves, boastful and proud.' The religion of 'self', as seen everywhere on social media, manifests itself in total narcissism and self-adoration. Such adulation is contrary to God's laws and utterly self-destructive. C. S. Lewis observed, 'All that we call human history – greed, selfishness, war, slavery is a long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy.'
