At the start of September, a book was quietly published on Amazon, purported to be written by Dr Steven J Lawson. It is called, Mercy in the Wilderness: How I Fell & What I Found. It started going viral on social media recently. The book claims to be an ‘unflinching confession’ of Lawson’s fall into sin and the collapse of his marriage and ministry. But some people are wondering if it is just a hoax.
Steven Lawson was a prominent preacher, especially among conservative Reformed Christians. He was a professor at John MacArthur’s Master's Seminary and also served as a teaching fellow for Ligonier Ministries. He headed up his own ministry, called ‘One Passion’. But it turned out that Dr Lawson had more than one passion, when in 2024 he was forced to resign from ministry after confessing to an extramarital affair with a woman in her 20s (Lawson is in his 70s).
The so-called confession book is currently the number one best seller on the US Amazon site within the ‘Christian forgiveness and mercy’ section. It is being sold for $14.99 in America, or £11.08 in the UK. Please don’t buy it. You’d only be rewarding a man who is monetising his ‘repentance’, or filling the pockets of a fraudulent imposter who used AI to write the book.
