The book is part of the ‘Let’s study’ series, which seeks to combine explanation with application of the Scripture. Scriptural quotations are from the English Standard Version. Fundamental to the exposition is the assumption of the full authority, inspiration and inerrancy of the Word of God.

The book is written in a style both balanced and engaging. Scriptural references are drawn widely from both testaments to support the author’s arguments. Other quotations and illustrations are taken from respected Christian figures covering a wide period of church history.

The text of 1 Timothy is helpfully divided into sections, with a clear understanding of the revelatory significance of each within the overall context of Scripture. A particular example is John Cook’s treatment of 1 Timothy 3:15-16. He emphasises the fact that the local church in all ages is ‘the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth’, but also rightly highlights the creedal statement of verse 16 and its unchanging significance.

Throughout the book there is a very strong statement of the fact that God is, in this epistle, conveying unchanging principles on which the local church in all ages is to be based.

The author deals well with the passage in 1 Timothy 3 dealing with the qualifications, character and service of those called to hold office in the local church. In this respect he is thoroughly biblical and does not adhere to unbiblical traditions which have developed since the time of the apostles.

John Cook also gives valuable guidelines for the preparation and leading of group Bible studies with particular respect to 1 Timothy. The appropriate text divisions and relevant questions to stimulate discussion are given in this section.

This is a book which I would recommend without reservation to readers and is another fine contribution to the ‘Let’s study’ series.
