The number of legal abortions in Poland has declined by 90 percent from 2020 to 2021, new figures reveal.
The drop, announced by Poland’s Ministry of Health, follows a court ruling that made it illegal to terminate a pregnancy based on a pre-birth medical diagnosis such as Down’s syndrome.
According to the official figures, 1,076 abortions were carried out in Poland in 2020, compared with just 107 in 2021.
Pro-life groups welcomed the news, saying the new law effectively saved the lives of nearly 1,000 children in just one year of its implementation.
