In October 1976 when I was a 20-year-old student at Reading University, I fell on my knees, repented of my sins, and believed on Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour. Now, nearly 50 years later, I reflect as a sinner saved by grace upon what has happened in my life and in the Christian world since then. This is the first of a series of articles entitled Reflections.

Soon after I was saved, I discovered the joy of Lord's Day worship. I remember the first time I went back to the Anglican church where I had gone to Sunday school as a youngster. The whole service seemed alive! The Bible readings, hymns, and words of the communion service jumped off the page with new meaning.

Praise, my soul, the King of heaven; to his feet your tribute bring. Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, evermore his praises sing. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise the everlasting King!

Yet soon as a young believer I discovered that all was not well in that church. There was, for instance, a sermon claiming that the Genesis account of creation was a myth. At the time I did not have the Bible knowledge to refute this, but in my heart I knew it was not right.
