Prince Charles has hailed the Authorised Version of the Bible as ‘part of the very architecture of our culture’.
According to the Bible Society, HRH the Prince of Wales has written the foreword to a special 400th anniversary edition of the KJV Bible. In it, he says the Bible is ‘a benchmark of civilisation. I have always given a high priority to the spiritual roots of our society.
‘I do believe that the survival of civilised values, as we have inherited them from our ancestors, depends on the corresponding survival in our hearts of that profound sense of the sacred’.
Ann Holt, director of programme for the Bible Society, presented the Prince with a leather-bound copy of the new KJV Bible at a reception at Clarence House on 17 March.
She said, ‘There has been no more important single publication than the King James Bible. Its effect on culture and language over the past 400 years has been huge globally’. The KJV Bible has sold more than 1 billion copies since its publication in 1611.
