The format of this lovely book is initially the most striking aspect. This carefully compiled journal of letters home from John and Ruth Carpenter (neé Rossiter; they were married while in China), missionaries with the China Inland Mission (now OMF), provides a first-hand insight into missionary life in China in the 1930s.

The letters convey the Carpenters’ encouragements and challenges, hardships and joys, and their determination to reach the lost with the gospel. This wonderfully personal account provides a snapshot of both the political and spiritual landscape of the interior province to which the Lord had called this young couple.
