The Slovakian government’s ban on public worship during the coronavirus pandemic was a violation of religious freedom, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has heard.

In a case supported by global religious advocacy group ADF International, Dr Ján Figeľ, a former EU Special Envoy for Freedom of Religion or Belief, told the Court the Slovak Republic’s prohibition of religious services due to Covid-19 was unlawful.

In 2021, the Slovak Republic prolonged its Covid restrictions, banning religious services just as other countries were relaxing restrictions on worship.
