The aim of this book is shown by its title. Its objectives of being scriptural and balanced are well met. The authors maintain close attention to the scriptural text and follow a well-trodden path between the extremes of forgetting about Satan and exaggerating his power.

The content of the book follows Ephesians 6:10-20. The belt, breastplate, footwear, shield of faith and helmet of salvation are all included. There are additional chapters on the devil, our conflict and prayer. There are also three useful appendices on God’s sovereignty and Satan, Christians and demon-possession, and praying for pastors. The book is written from a Reformed perspective.

A plain, readable style is adopted and the NKJV is the translation used. The authors are pastors and useful practical lessons are included. There are some excellent and heart-warming quotations strategically incorporated. Four questions for reflection and discussion follow each chapter and add to the book’s usefulness.

The final question is particularly thought-provoking: ‘What is the most important lesson you have learned in this book?’ A further significant point is made in a quotation from Richard Lenski: ‘Satan is not free to assail us at will and with what power he pleases. Satan may try us out only by God’s permission and to the extent of that permission — a mighty comfort for us all’ (p.118).

I find it difficult to be fair in giving a star rating. Readers of Gurnall, Flavel and Pink might find this book too concise to get their spiritual teeth into and give only two stars, whereas those looking for a more manageable and reassuring outline of the subject might delightedly give five stars. In my view at least three stars are merited.
