A Christian teacher in Sunderland is taking legal action against her former employer after being dismissed following classroom discussions about abortion and political issues.
Anita Meston, 63, is bringing a discrimination claim against Biddick Academy, a state secondary school in Washington, with support from Christian legal advocacy organisation Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF).
According to ADF, Meston was covering a Year 8 history lesson in March 2025 when a pupil asked whether she was ‘pro-abortion’.
She replied that she was ‘pro-life’ and, when asked to explain, said her Christian faith informed her position and that she knew women who regretted having abortions.
