The UK Supreme Court has granted permission for a group of independent Christian schools, parents, and pupils to appeal the government’s decision to impose value-added tax (VAT) on independent school fees.
The appeal, which is backed by the Christian Legal Centre, will argue that the government’s VAT policy disproportionately impacts Christian schools and the families who choose them, particularly those of modest means.
Earlier this year, the Court of Appeal rejected the schools’ case, but lawyers for the schools argue that the ruling placed insufficient weight on the tangible harms which were caused by the government’s policy.
