Organised crime in the UK is more involved in running Britain’s sex trade than experts had previously believed, according to the Police Foundation.
Research from the foundation has found that nearly three-quarters of brothels have links to dangerous criminal gangs.
Some 65 brothels have been identified as operating in Bristol between 2013 and 2014, linked to 142 people in prostitution and 74 offenders who managed them.
Nola Leach, chief executive of CARE, said: ‘This new report is both shocking and hugely alarming, as it shows that vulnerable women are being exploited in plain sight. We urge police forces across the UK to prioritise the issue of exploitation in prostitution and to start cracking down on brothels being run across the UK’.
